True Character
I have heard it said that character is doing what's right when nobody's looking. Wednesday morning, I found that to be true.
My alarm sounded way before my ears were ready to hear it. 4:55. I felt exhausted after being disturbed by lights and talking well into the night. I wasn't ready to get up, but somehow I stumbled down the stairs to go wake up my roommates - we were supposed to meet Sean for an early morning run in a few minutes.
As I stood in the doorway to their room, I teetered on the edge of decision. I could wake them up and go running as planned........or I could go back to bed and pretend that I had slept through my alarm. My mind knew what I should do, but my body just wanted to go back to bed. It was too tempting, so I turned around and headed back to my room and crawled into bed. But as hard as I tried, when I closed my eyes there wasn't any peace, I couldn't sleep. I knew that I couldn't just stay in bed and leave Sean outside wondering where we were. So once again, I dragged myself out of bed and headed downstairs, this time waking up Judith. We were a little late (sorry Sean), but we still went running.
I believe that true character can be found in those moments of darkness, when there's nobody else around to see it.

Sometimes my deepest contemplating happens in the dark too. It helps to make a decision that's good for myself with no one around. Just me and God.
