The Engagement
One of the main reasons we went to Cambodia was to share in the engagement of our friend Seyha to his fiancee Diana. The engagement ceremony was to be on Sunday, April 12, so as soon as the sun went down on Sabbath evening, a flurry of activity began that lasted long into the night.
In the kitchen, we were busy preparing food for the ceremony. In Cambodian kitchens, there isn't a lot of counter space, so they lay out a bamboo mat and do all the preparations on the floor. I really like it! It's a lot easier to sit for several hours rather than to stand.
Even the driveway was occupied by a huge tent that covered the tables and chairs where the meal was held.

Eating the meal after the ceremony. There weren't enough chairs so we got to sit on the ground (traditional Cambodian style) to eat and we felt privileged to eat with the couple of honor.

Others were busy transforming the living room with many colorful decorations. Fruit was placed out on platters which was a part of the ceremony where each of the couple offered fruit to the opposite side of the family.
